As the market leader, Bancontact MisterCash Company plays an important role in bringing issuers and acquirers together. We want to facilitate consultations between the two parties, start joint projects and realise shared ambitions. It is in our nature to maintain that dialogue and to assume the role of mouthpiece for our sector.

History

For a long time, cash was THE method of payment. In the late 60s, however, cheques and transfers became very popular. This was coupled with a huge increase in the number of bank accounts. And that forced the banks to automate. This automation quickly became visible at street level.

Generale Bank launches its first automatic money dispenser, Paymatic.

A few months later, Bank van Brussel/Banque de Bruxelles and Krediet Bank start dispensing money automatically as well.

The Bankomat network dispenses 1,000 BEF (24.79 EUR) notes and uses a perforated cardand an identification code.

Very quickly the banks realise that automatic money dispensers are the ideal solution for their customers.

But it’s clear that uniformity is needed in the system. So the Belgian banks put their heads together. Because of commercial differences, however, two different systems emerge:Bancontact and Mister Cash.

The automation of the bank sector is a great success.

Other sectors embrace the new technology too. The first to join in is the petroleum industry.

Bancontact and Mister Cash put aside their differences and merge into Bancontact/Mister Cash.

Banksys is created to manage the new joint infrastructure.

Banksys launches a revolutionary new idea: Proton, the electronic purse.

The creation of the World Wide Web in the early 90s offers new perspectives for electronic payments.

Methods of payment are continually being refined.

on 1 January Europe is introduced to a new currency: the Euro.

All the cards, terminals and ATMs are adapted.

Europe decides to bring all the payment methods in Europe into line by the end of 2010.

In order to carry more weight in the discussions,Banksys and Bank Card Company look for a new partner. In late 2006 they are incorporated into Atos Origin. On 1 June 2007 they effectively merge and adopt the name Atos Worldline, a symbol of their shared ambitions.

Brand & License Cy was established at the sale of Banksys and the partnership that manages the payment schemes Bancontact/Mister Cash and Proton. The company decides to adjust the payment scheme Bancontact/Mister Cash to the European norms for electronic payments (SEPA).
