Renegotiation of NAFTA – 27th of April 2017

  • by

Despite of previous address regarding NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) termination, President Trump agreed to negotiate with President Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for a better and stronger agreement for all three countries.

The two-decade old agreement needs swift reconsideration by the three leaders to prevent the White House intention from withdrawing. Last week news revealed that the White House has prepared a draft to notify the United States withdraw from NAFTA. This Draft would give Canada and Mexico a six-month notice of exit from the agreement by United States.

The increment of tariffs on imported softwood lumber from Canada alongside of new complaints about milk product pricing in Canada by the President Trump shows  the White House attempt for new treaties and agreements.

While President Trump thinks NAFTA has weakened United States manufacturing sector, but Beatriz Leycegui (the former Mexico’s deputy minister on foreign trade) believes the new policy as a strategy to bring pressure on Mexico and Canada.

There are Republican senators who are opposed to the NAFTA termination as this agreement was crucial for US products export. They believe the changes may lead to a disaster for US economy.

In spite of resist against the revision of NAFTA, still President Trump believes the renegotiation is absolutely inevitable for a better and up-to-date treaty and agreement.
